Tokyo with Kids

Updated: Jul 17

Tokyo may be known for its fast-paced lifestyle and its abundance of entertainment, dining and shopping options, but it’s also a great place to bring children. The city has many attractions especially for children, and there are also many outdoor activities and culinary experiences to enjoy. Here’s a guide on what to do with kids in Tokyo.

Attractions

Tokyo has a plethora of attractions that kids will love. Top of the list is the Tokyo Disney Resort, consisting of two theme parks: Disneyland, with its seven themed areas including the four traditional Disney lands of Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland, filled with fun rides, and DisneySea with its nautical themed areas, such as Mediterranean Harbor and Mermaid Lagoon. But it’s certainly not the only place to have fun in Tokyo. Puroland is an indoor theme park which specializes in live shows and meet-and-greets, great if you are traveling with small children who aren’t old enough to enjoy rides. Miraikan is an awesome museum exploring emerging science and innovation; make sure to catch one of the Asimo robot demonstrations that take place throughout the day. If you want to combine fun with education, head to Kidzania, a museum where kids can experience different career fields, such as medicine and manufacturing.

Outdoor Activities

If you want to get out into green spaces and natural surroundings, there are lots of options in Tokyo. Inokashira Park is one of the most popular parks in the city, and it’s a great place to take one of the swan boats out onto the lake, especially during the cherry blossom season. For hiking, head to Mount Takao. It’s not too high, so it’s perfect for short legs. The mountain even has a Monkey Park and wild plant garden to explore while you’re there. If your young ones like to get athletic, take them to Heiwanomori Park where there are 40 obstacle courses with Ziplines, climbing nets, and swinging bridges to scramble over. Then when you all need to unwind after a hard day’s fun, soak in one of the many onsens for a traditional experience.

Culinary Experiences

Japan is known for its amazing cuisine, and there are some great places to take your kids for some extra special treats. For those with a sweet tooth, Sweets Paradise is a fantastic all-you-can-eat sweets buffet that will satisfy even the pickiest of children. Another great dessert to try is the sweet crepes that can be found all over Harajuku and have tasty fillings like ice cream and fruit. If you want your child to have an authentic cooking experience, head to one of the many okonomiyaki restaurants. A traditional vegetable and meat pancake, at these restaurants you get to grill the meal yourself. Kids will also love Ninja Akasaka, where the waiters dress up as ninjas. Tokyo is a wonderful destination, full of excitement, wonder, and fun, and there’s absolutely no reason why your kids can’t enjoy it too. In fact, it’s a dead cert that they will love it.
